City of Sunnyvale issued the following announcement on Jan. 6
At last night’s (Jan. 5) regular Council meeting, Mayor Larry Klein was sworn in as the City’s first directly elected mayor. Three councilmembers elected from the City’s even-numbered districts also took office – Alysa Cisneros (District 2); Russ Melton (District 4); and Omar Din (District 6). Cisneros and Din are serving their first terms in office. Melton was reelected, having served a term in the City’s previous at-large election system. The City Council also selected Councilmember Glenn Hendricks as the new vice mayor. The mayor and councilmembers serve four-year terms. The vice mayor serves a one-year term and is selected by the City Council each January.
The City also recognized outgoing Vice Mayor Nancy Smith and Councilmember Michael S. Goldman for their service.
At the March 3, 2020 election, City voters approved changing to a district-based electoral system for selecting City councilmembers, with a directly elected Mayor. Voters in Districts 1, 3 and 5 will elect councilmembers in the November 8, 2022 election.
